Waiting on Wednesday: Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff (Nevernight Chronicles #2)
Publication Date: September 7th, 2017 (UK)/September 5th, 2017 (US)
Harper Voyager UK (UK)/Thomas Dunne Books (US)
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

Godsgrave (The Nevernight Chronicle, #2)Godsgrave (The Nevernight Chronicle, #2)

From Goodreads:

"A ruthless young assassin continues her journey for revenge in this new epic fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Jay Kristoff.

Assassin Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church ministry think she’s far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she’s no closer to ending Consul Scaeva and Cardinal Duomo, or avenging her familia. And after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia begins to suspect the motives of the Red Church itself.

When it’s announced that Scaeva and Duomo will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself to a gladiatorial collegium for a chance to finally end them. Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold within the collegium walls, and the body count rises, Mia will be forced to choose between loyalty and revenge, and uncover a secret that could change the very face of her world.

Set in the world of Nevernight, which Publishers Weekly called “absorbing in its complexity and bold in its bloodiness,” Godsgrave will continue to thrill and satisfy fantasy fans everywhere. "

Okay, so this one seems like a given - I am beyond excited for Godsgrave! This is easily one of my most anticipated releases of this year and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. I am so thankful to have been able to pre-order a copy of the Goldsboro numbered editions since I also ordered the Nevernight Goldsboro edition, and that just makes me even more excited.  After the way the way Nevernight ended, I have no idea what sort of things Kristoff will pull this time, but I've only seen raves for it so far. Also, all US pre-orders will be signed, so get on that if you're interested!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women by Elizabeth Norton

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:
The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women by Elizabeth Norton
Publication Date: July 4th, 2017
Pegasus Books
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women: A Social History
"The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress; of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife; when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best.

Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before. Historian Elizabeth Norton explores the life cycle of the Tudor woman, from childhood to old age, through the diverging examples of women such as Elizabeth Tudor, Henry VIII’s sister; Cecily Burbage, Elizabeth's wet nurse; Mary Howard, widowed but influential at court; Elizabeth Boleyn, mother of a controversial queen; and Elizabeth Barton, a peasant girl who would be lauded as a prophetess. Their stories are interwoven with studies of topics ranging from Tudor toys to contraception to witchcraft, painting a portrait of the lives of queens and serving maids, nuns and harlots, widows and chaperones. Norton brings this vibrant period to colorful life in an evocative and insightful social history."

I've read so many books and seen so many shows/movies that have  a Tudor-period setting, so I think that this book would be absolutely fascinating to read. I love reading about  overlooked women from all periods of history and all classes because I think it gives such a better picture of history and the time period. Can't wait for this one!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Stone in the Skull by Elizabeth Bear

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:
The Stone Skull by Elizabeth Bear
Publication Date: October 10, 2017
Tor Books
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Stone in the Skull (Lotus Kingdoms, #1)
"The Stone in the Skull, the first volume in her new trilogy, takes readers over the dangerous mountain passes of the Steles of the Sky and south into the Lotus Kingdoms.

The Gage is a brass automaton created by a wizard of Messaline around the core of a human being. His wizard is long dead, and he works as a mercenary. He is carrying a message from a the most powerful sorcerer of Messaline to the Rajni of the Lotus Kingdom. With him is The Dead Man, a bitter survivor of the body guard of the deposed Uthman Caliphate, protecting the message and the Gage. They are friends, of a peculiar sort.

They are walking into a dynastic war between the rulers of the shattered bits of a once great Empire. "

Although I've heard many great things about Elizabeth Bear's work, I've still yet to read any of her work. I honestly have no idea if this is something that I will love or not, but I'm really intrigued by the description and am eager to check it out!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Last Neanderthal by Claire Cameron

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:
The Last Neanderthal by Claire Cameron
Publication Date: April 25th, 2017
Little, Brown and Company
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Last Neanderthal
"From the author of The Bear, the enthralling story of two women separated by millennia, but linked by an epic journey that will transform them both 40,000 years in the past, the last family of Neanderthals roams the earth. After a crushingly hard winter, their numbers are low, but Girl, the oldest daughter, is just coming of age and her family is determined to travel to the annual meeting place and find her a mate.

But the unforgiving landscape takes its toll, and Girl is left alone to care for Runt, a foundling of unknown origin. As Girl and Runt face the coming winter storms, Girl realizes she has one final chance to save her people, even if it means sacrificing part of herself.

In the modern day, archaeologist Rosamund Gale works well into her pregnancy, racing to excavate newly found Neanderthal artifacts before her baby comes. Linked across the ages by the shared experience of early motherhood, both stories examine the often taboo corners of women's lives.

Haunting, suspenseful, and profoundly moving, THE LAST NEANDERTHAL asks us to reconsider all we think we know about what it means to be human."

I'm a big historical fiction fan, and it's pretty rare to find books set in a time period with Neanderthals, so that immediately intrigues me! I'm generally not a big fan of historical fiction novels that alternate between past and present, but something about this book just sounds really interesting, so I'm definitely looking forward to checking it out!

Waiting on Wednesday: House of Names by Colm Tóibín

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:
House of Name by Colm Tóibín
Publication Date: May 9th, 2017
Scribner
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

House of Names: A Novel
"From the thrilling imagination of bestselling, award-winning Colm Tóibín comes a retelling of the story of Clytemnestra—spectacularly audacious, violent, vengeful, lustful, and instantly compelling—and her children.

“I have been acquainted with the smell of death.” So begins Clytemnestra’s tale of her own life in ancient Mycenae, the legendary Greek city from which her husband King Agamemnon left when he set sail with his army for Troy. On the day of his daughter's wedding, Agamemnon orders her sacrifice. His daughter is led to her death, and Agamemnon leads his army into battle, where he is rewarded with glorious victory.

Three years later, he returns home and finds his murderous action has set the entire family -- mother, brother, sister -- on a path of intimate violence, as they enter a world of hushed commands and soundless journeys through the palace's dungeons and bedchambers. As his wife, Clytemnestra, seeks his death, his daughter, Electra, is the silent observer to the family's game of innocence while his son, Orestes, is sent into bewildering, frightening exile where survival is far from certain. Out of their desolating loss, Electra and Orestes must find a way to right these wrongs of the past, even if it means committing themselves to a terrible, barbarous act.

House of Names is a story of intense longing and shocking betrayal. It is a work of great beauty, and daring, from one of the world's finest living writers."

The classicist in me burst into delight when I first came across this book. I've never seen any Clytemnestra story retellings, so I am incredibly excited about this book (if you know of any, do tell)! I've also never read anything by Colm Tóibín, so I have no idea what to expect. I can't wait for this one's release!

Waiting on Wednesday: Lost Boy by Christina Henry

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:
Lost Boy by Christina Henry
Publication Date: July 4th, 2017
Berkley Books
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook
"From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook—a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is…

There is one version of my story that everyone knows.

And then there is the truth. This is how it happened. How I went from being Peter Pan’s first—and favorite—lost boy to his greatest enemy.

Peter brought me to his island b
ecause there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter's idea of fun is sharper than a pirate’s sword. Because it’s never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock—the kinds of playthings that bite.
Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever."

Growing up, I never cared much about the Disney Peter Pan movie/story. thought I did love the movie Finding Neverlad. However, in recent years I've started reading a variety of different Peter Pan retellings and Peter Pan-inspired stories (Tiger Lily, Alias Hook, etc.), and I've really grow to love it. This particular one really grabs my attention, and I am dying to read it!

Waiting on Wednesday: Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

Men Without Women by Haruki Murakami
Publication Date: May 17th, 2017
Knopf
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

Men Without Women
"A dazzling new collection of short stories--the first major new work of fiction from the beloved, internationally acclaimed, Haruki Murakami since his #1 best-selling Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage.

Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are vanishing cats and smoky bars, lonely hearts and mysterious women, baseball and the Beatles, woven together to tell stories that speak to us all.

Marked by the same wry humor that has defined his entire body of work, in this collection Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic."

Anyone that knows me probably is aware of the fact that Murakami is one of my absolute favorite authors, so a new release by him is one that I can't wait to read. Plus, I just think this one sounds really interesting on its own.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter by Theodora Gloss

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter by Theodora Gloss
Publication Date: June 20th, 2017
Saga Press
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter
"Mary Jekyll, alone and penniless following her parents' death, quickly finds herself drawn into the secrets of her father's mysterious past. A clue leads her to believe that Edward Hyde, her father's former friend and a murderer, may be nearby, and there is still a reward for information leading to his capture - a reward which would solve all er immediate financial woes. Her hunt leads her not to Edward Hyde but to Diana, his daughter, a near feral child left to be raised by nuns.

With the assistance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Mary continues her search for the elusive Hyde and soon gathers around her more women, all of whom have been created through terrifying experimentation: Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherine Moreau, and Justine Frankestein. When their investigations lead them to the discovery of a secret society of immoral and power-crazed scientists, the horrors of their past soon arrive as well, and it is up to the five of them to stop the malicious machinations of the Société les Alchimistes. It is time for the monsters to triumph over the monstrous."

I love Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - it's one of my favorite stories. (Does anyone else remember that episode from the show Arthur that was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde themed? No?) I also love the Sherlock Holmes stories. So combining those characters, along with the many any other intriguing character names - Catherine Moreau, Justine Frankenstein - makes this book sound incredible! I am so intrigued by this, not to mention that absolutely gorgeous cover.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Empire's Ghost by Isabelle Steiger

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

The Empire's Ghost by Isabelle Steiger
Publication Date: May 16th, 2017
Thomas Dunne Books
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Empire's Ghost
"An epic fantasy debut, The Empire’s Ghost weaves together the lives of the haves and the have-nots both desperately fighting to reassemble the remains of a fallen empire.

The empire of Elesthene once spanned a continent, but its rise heralded the death of magic. It tore itself apart from within, leaving behind a patchwork of kingdoms struggling to rebuild. But when a new dictator, the ambitious and enigmatic Imperator Elgar, seizes power in the old capital and seeks to recreate the lost empire anew, the other kingdoms have little hope of stopping him. Prince Kelken of Reglay finds himself at odds with his father at his country’s darkest hour; the marquise of Esthrades is unmatched in politics and strategy, but she sits at a staggering military disadvantage. And Issamira, the most powerful of the free countries, has shut itself off from the conflict, thrown into confusion by the disappearance of its crown prince and the ensuing struggle for succession.

Everything seems aligned in Elgar’s favor, but when he presses a band of insignificant but skilled alley-dwellers into his service for a mission of the greatest secrecy, they find an unexpected opportunity to alter the balance of power in the war. Through their actions and those of the remaining royals, they may uncover not just a way to defeat Elgar, but also a deeper truth about their world’s lost history.

Isabelle Steiger has crafted a powerful and masterful debut with The Empire's Ghost, the first book in a haunting new epic fantasy series."

I've had my eye on The Empire's Ghost for a while, but I've seen hardly anything about it around the blogging community, so my interest in this book just keeps growing! I think it sounds like it has incredible potential, and I really can't wait to have a chance to read this one. :)

Waiting on Wednesday: The Changeling by Victor Lavalle

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

The Changeling by Victor Lavalle
Publication Date: June 13th, 2017
Spiegel & Grau
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Changeling
"One man’s thrilling journey through an enchanted world to find his wife, who has disappeared after seemingly committing an unforgiveable act of violence, from the award-winning author of the The Devil in Silver and Big Machine.

“If the literary gods mixed together Haruki Murakami and Ralph Ellison…the result would be Victor LaValle.”—Anthony Doerr

Apollo Kagwa has had strange dreams that have haunted him since childhood. An antiquarian book dealer with a business called Improbabilia, he is just beginning to settle into his new life as a committed and involved father, unlike his own father who abandoned him, when his wife Emma begins acting strange.

Disconnected and uninterested in their new baby boy, Emma at first seems to be exhibiting all the signs of post-partum depression, but it quickly becomes clear that her troubles go far beyond that. Before Apollo can do anything to help, Emma commits a horrific act—beyond any parent’s comprehension—and vanishes, seemingly into thin air. Thus begins Apollo’s odyssey through a world he only thought he understood to find a wife and child who are nothing like he’d imagined. His quest begins when he meets a mysterious stranger who claims to have information about Emma’s whereabouts. Apollo then begins a journey that takes him to a forgotten island in the East River of New York City, a graveyard full of secrets, a forest in Queens where immigrant legends still live, and finally back to a place he thought he had lost forever. This dizzying tale is ultimately a story about family and the unfathomable secrets of the people we love."

I only recently became of aware of this one, but the synopsis on Goodreads immediately captured me and made me really want to know more. I think this book sounds like it has a lot of potential, so I'll be keeping my out for its release in June!

Waiting on Wednesday: If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio
Publication Date: April 11th, 2017
Flatiron Books
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

If We Were Villains
"Enter the players. There were seven of us then, seven bright young things with wide precious futures ahead of us. Until that year, we saw no further than the books in front of our faces.

On the day Oliver Marks is released from jail, the man who put him there is waiting at the door. Detective Colborne wants to know the truth, and after ten years, Oliver is finally ready to tell it.

Ten years ago: Oliver is one of seven young Shakespearean actors at Dellecher Classical Conservatory, a place of keen ambition and fierce competition. In this secluded world of firelight and leather-bound books, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingénue, extra. But in their fourth and final year, the balance of power begins to shift, good-natured rivalries turn ugly, and on opening night real violence invades the students’ world of make believe. In the morning, the fourth-years find themselves facing their very own tragedy, and their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, each other, and themselves that they are innocent.

Part coming-of-age story, part confession, If We Were Villains explores the magical and dangerous boundary between art and life. In this tale of loyalty and betrayal, madness and ecstasy, the players must choose what roles to play before the curtain falls."

So for quite a while now I have followed an incredibly awesome blog on Tumblr called Duke of Bookingham. The owner of this blog has recently revealed herself to be M. L. Rio and has also finally revealed what she has been working on: If We Were Villains! I had a feeling that this book would interest me before I even knew about, and after reading more about, I have discovered that everyting about this book just screams out to me, and I am extremely excited to read this one.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Black Witch by Laurie Forest

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

The Black Witch by Laurie Forest
Publication Date: May 2nd, 2017
Harlequin Teen
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Black Witch (The Black Witch Chronicles #1)
"'A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining.'

So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa’s heir—but while she is the absolute image of her famous grandmother, Elloren is utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren is eager to join her brothers at the prestigious Verpax University and finally embrace a destiny of her own, free from the shadow of her grandmother’s legacy. But she soon realizes that the University, which admits all manner of peoples—including the fire-wielding, winged Icarals, the sworn enemies of her people—is an even more treacherous place for the granddaughter of the Black Witch."

There are so many aspects of this blurb that interest me:  prophecies, 'Black Witches,' apothecaries, a university setting -- I need it now! There are a few elements that do bring me some worry, such as having another protagonist that is somehow lacking a power she is supposed to have, but I definitely have high hopes for this one. Also, I am really entranced by this cover aesthetic.

Waiting on Wednesday: Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

Exit West by Mohsin Hamid
Publication Date: March 7th, 2017
Riverhead Books
Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

Exit West
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet—sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors—doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through.

Exit West follows these characters as they emerge into an alien and uncertain future, struggling to hold on to each other, to their past, to the very sense of who they are. Profoundly intimate and powerfully inventive, it tells an unforgettable story of love, loyalty, and courage that is both completely of our time and for all time.

I have read and enjoyed two of Hamid's other books, The Reluctant Fundamentalist and How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, so I was pleased to see that some new work from him would be coming out this year!

But the invading army turns the monastery into a hospital, and Tashi catches the eye of Xian, the regiment’s fearless young commander.

Though Tashi grapples with their decision, their volatile bonded tiger doesn't question her allegiances. Katala slaughters Xian’s soldiers, leading the enemy to hunt her. But an Inhabiter’s bond to their animal is for life—if Katala dies, so will Tashi.

I have been seeing this book everywhere, and I every time I see it I become more intrigued. The cover itself is beautiful and really intriguing. I'm always a little wary of romantic plots that appear like the one mentioned in this summary, but I have high hopes for this!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights exciting upcoming releases that we can't wait to be released!

This week's upcoming book spotlight is:

The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova
Publication Date: April 11th, 2017
Ballantine Books
Amazon |  Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

From Goodreads:

The Shadow Land
From the #1 bestselling author of "The Historian "comes an engrossing novel" "that spans the past and the present and unearths the dark secrets of Bulgaria, a beautiful and haunted country.

A young American woman, Alexandra Boyd, has traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, hoping that life abroad will salve the wounds left by the loss of her beloved brother. Soon after arriving in this elegant East European city, however, she helps an elderly couple into a taxi and realizes too late that she has accidentally kept one of their bags. Inside she finds an ornately carved wooden box engraved with a name: Stoyan Lazarov. Raising the hinged lid, she discovers that she is holding an urn filled with human ashes.

As Alexandra sets out to locate the family and return this precious item, she will first have to uncover the secrets of a talented musician who was shattered by oppression and she will find out all too quickly that this knowledge is fraught with its own danger.

Kostova's new novel is a tale of immense scope that delves into the horrors of a century and traverses the culture and landscape of this mysterious country. Suspenseful and beautifully written, it explores the power of stories, the pull of the past, and the hope and meaning that can sometimes be found in the aftermath of loss.

I just realized last week that a new book by Elizabeth Kostova was coming out next year and all my mind could do was scream at me that Elizabeth Kostova has a new book coming out next year and it sounds incredible. I was a big of The Historian for a number of reasons, such as the immense thought and etail that went into that behemoth of a book and the lovely, fluid writing style that Kostova possesses. To be completely honest, however, I'm not usually a huge fan of books written in the contemporary time period, and this one sounds like it might be, but I'm thinking that won't be a problem. You don't see many books with Bulgarian settings, so I'm excited!

Pyrre Lakatur doesn’t like the word skullsworn. It fails to capture the faith and grace, the peace and beauty of her devotion to the God of Death. She is not, to her mind, an assassin, not a murderer--she is a priestess. At least, she will be a priestess if she manages to pass her final trial.

The problem isn’t the killing. Pyrre has been killing and training to kill, studying with some of the most deadly men and women in the world, since she was eight. The problem, strangely, is love. To pass her Trial, Pyrre has ten days to kill the ten people enumerated in an ancient song, including "the one you love / who will not come again."
Pyrre is not sure she’s ever been in love. If she were a member of a different religious order, a less devoted, disciplined order, she might cheat. The Priests of Ananshael, however, don’t look kindly on cheaters. If Pyrre fails to find someone to love, or fails to kill that someone, they will give her to the god.
Pyrre’s not afraid to die, but she hates to quit, hates to fail, and so, with a month before her trial begins, she returns to the city of her birth, the place where she long ago offered an abusive father to the god and abandoned a battered brother—in the hope of finding love...and ending it on the edge of her sword.

I've heard great things about Brian Staveley in the fantasy world, but I've yet to read any of his work! I hope to rememdy that with Skullsworn, which has a really promising plot summary and just sounds full of suspense and adventure. And a little darkness, and I love darkness.

City of Saints and Thieves
In the shadows of Sangui City, there lives a girl who doesn't exist. After fleeing the Congo as refugees, Tina and her mother arrived in Kenya looking for the chance to build a new life and home. Her mother quickly found work as a maid for a prominent family, headed by Roland Greyhill, one of the city’s most respected business leaders. But Tina soon learns that the Greyhill fortune was made from a life of corruption and crime. So when her mother is found shot to death in Mr. Greyhill's personal study, she knows exactly who’s behind it.

With revenge always on her mind, Tina spends the next four years surviving on the streets alone, working as a master thief for the Goondas, Sangui City’s local gang. It’s a job for the Goondas that finally brings Tina back to the Greyhill estate, giving her the chance for vengeance she’s been waiting for. But as soon as she steps inside the lavish home, she’s overtaken by the pain of old wounds and the pull of past friendships, setting into motion a dangerous cascade of events that could, at any moment, cost Tina her life. But finally uncovering the incredible truth about who killed her mother—and why—keeps her holding on in this fast-paced nail-biting thriller.

This book just popped up on my radar, and I'm surprised I haven't heard more about it! I love that we have such a intriguing novel set in an African setting (finally!), and I just really can't wait to check this one out.
